Dickerson Harbor Fiberglass Maintenance

Kevin StevemsKevin Stevens gets credit for quality polishing. At Oxford, MD, Charlie Kemp of Bermuda and Eastbay 58 owner informed John Shannahan that Dickerson Harbor is known along the waterway for quality fiberglass maintenance. Kevin has been managing the fiberglass department at Dickerson Harbor since the 70's. For the past ten years its been more Eastbay and GB polishing than construction of Dickerson Sailboats. Nevertheless, this Trappe facility is on the map for stopping the trend of sun bleached fiberglass boats. The combination of conscientious used of polishing compounds and silicone polymer polish over a ten year period has achieved this desired result. Below are some photos of the projects Kevin is working on during August.

Dickerson Harbor's boat buildings help too! It's the combination of quality polish and shelter from the sun that has turned the tide for up to 100 GBs and Eastbays each year.

Dickerson Harbor is also a dealer for quality gelcoats. Any age of Grand Banks or Eastbay gelcoat can be matched. Most gelcoat products are kept in stock. Recently a serious repair was made to the stern of a large blue express cruiser without the need for resorting to an Awlgrip paint job for the hull.

Kevin is also Oxford Yacht Agency's contact for the NMMA five star dealership program.

Tips for keeping your yacht's gelcoat in Bristol fashion.

  • Fiberglass should be maintained on a regular basis. It takes work!

  • If the boat is kept dry and inside away from the elements, then exposure is minimal and the fiberglass can be maintained about every 3 months or so with great results.

  • For boats that have been oxidized and have some fading or dullness, waxes and polishes may seem to restore the shine, but often don't maintain it for more than a month or so. The oxidation will need to be removed.

  • Older fiberglass often oxidizes to an extreme. No matter what is used for polishing the surface, it still looks dull. Sometimes the gel can be wet-sanded, but only if it is thick enough to slough the surface. If too thin, the hull will need to be painted.
